This Years Breakthrough Album Is…
Is it possible to love someone so much that it can become a curse? Sparks The Rescue of Portland, Maine gives us the answer in their monumental sophomore album The Worst Thing I’ve been Cursed With (May 10th, 2011). While admitting they let their hearts get the better of them to flash that vulnerable side, this five piece modern rock group proves that what doesn’t kill them just makes these guys rock that much stronger. The album includes twelve unforgettably clever songs with an additional bonus track that is so surprisingly funny it seems Sparks The Rescue could fit in comfortably at any comedy club. This band’s ability to create impossibly catchy choruses and head banging yet danceable melodies is unbelievable but certainly not an accident. The evolution of Sparks The Rescue has been headed toward this perfect blend of pop, punk, and rock sounds for over half a decade and they show no signs of letting up. Now, I must mention that this album can be described as a sequel, due to obvious references to the bands 2008 debut Eyes to the Sun. There is a clear theme being carried over from album to album as the lyrics illustrate a dialogue of romantic beginnings in a relationship all the way to the desperate end. Although I find The Worst Thing I’ve been Cursed With to be evenly distributed with great songs there are still some standouts including “She’s A Bitch, And I’m A Fool” and “The Weirdest Way”, both songs have incredible feeling and just beg to be sung along to. It is undeniable Sparks The Rescue is the band to look out for this year and they might sneak up on us all if we’re not paying close attention.
